He is best known for playing the role of Ralphie's little brother Randy Parker in the movie A Christmas Story. His first role was as randy in A Christmas Story in 1983. He also starred in the 1984 film Crimes of Passion.

Petrella appeared in episodes of the TV series Diff'rent Strokes, Who's the Boss?, Mr. President, Once a Hero, Highway to Heaven, My Sister Sam, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Crafty.
